How to organize category and filter URLs for e-commerce SEO
Keep sorting and filter combinations from creating uncontrolled duplicate pages.

Choose which pages deserve indexing
Every color, price and sort combination does not need to be a separate search page. Distinguish the main category from stable subcategories that answer real demand. Choose a consistent canonical or indexing strategy for low-value parameter combinations.
Align links and canonical signals
Sitemap entries, internal links and canonical tags should point to the preferred URLs. Do not canonicalize an important category to an unrelated one. Paginated pages need distinct content and accessible links; pointing them all to page one can impair product discovery.
- Sample category URLs
- Filter and sort parameters
- Indexable subcategory decisions
- Sitemap and internal-link checks
Audit actual crawl data
Inspect indexed URL examples, server responses and Google-selected canonicals in Search Console. Blocking a URL in robots.txt may also prevent Google from reading its noindex or canonical signal.
